Persona (Cinemaniacs #4)
By | May 5, 2008

“There is no denying the absorbing theme and the perfection in direction, acting, editing and lensing.”
-VARIETY
A masterful film of 1966 vintage that showcases the technical prowess of renowned Swedish arthouse filmmaker, Ingmar Bergman. Persona follows the potent relationship between two women, Elisabet (Liv Ullmann), an actress who froze during a traumatic experience onstage and lost the power of speech and Alma (Bibi Andersson), her cheerful psychiatric nurse, who fills the time by talking about her boyfriend and her past sexual encounters.
Bergman makes use of mirror imagery and hypnotic projections to help portray the ongoing processes of psychoanalysis and desire between the two women in their isolated island hideaway. Through Elisabet, the film explores the relationship between artist and audience and the detachment from real life that can pursue. As the film develops, the tables turn and Alma, the nurse, appears stripped bare as she shares more about her self and ends up feeling betrayed by her silent patient. Reality and fantasy are fused as the film lends itself to a variety of plausible interpretations.
